At the termination of an aggregate extraction contract at Lackford Fen in Suffolk, the Suffolk Wildlife Trust took over this quarry site and developed it into a nature reserve for the wetland bird population. We were selected to design an interpretation centre for this new nature reserve, to provide visitor facilities including meeting and exhibition areas and a viewing gallery over the lake to the north.
We created a very simple cost-effective building with a timber frame and cladding in treated but unfinished timber. The roof is a resin based profiled agricultural type panel system. Despite being a very cost effective building, the Visitor Interpretation Centre has become an important centre for the Trust and has raised its profile in the area.
